A group of Lincoln County instrumental students is taking advantage of a rare opportunity to play in a full orchestra, rehearsing and performing with the Portland-based Oregon Pro Arte Youth Chamber Orchestra (OPAYCO) as part of the Newport Symphony Orchestra’s new education initiatives. Lincoln County students and community members will have an opportunity the see the group perform with its Lincoln County guests on Monday, April 28.
School groups will be bused to the Newport Performing Arts Center during the school day to see the performance, which will be repeated for the community at the Performing Arts Center at 7:30 pm that evening. Admission for the evening concert is by donation.
Local students were admitted to the program by application, and will rehearse twice with the conductor and ensemble before the performances on the 28th. They will perform two pieces alongside OPAYCO on the concert program.
OPAYCO, consisting of musicians of ages 12-23, is conducted by Newport Symphony violinist Cindy Petty. Petty is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Jewish Community Orchestra of Portland, and she maintains a private studio where she teaches violin and viola and coaches small chamber ensembles. In 2004 she was honored to perform as the Guest Concert Master of the Sapporo Philharmonic in Japan.
The Newport Symphony Orchestra, the sponsor and organizer of this event, is supported by the City of Newport, Coast Arts, and various foundations, businesses and individual donors. The NSO’s education programs are underwritten by a grant from the Lincoln County Cultural Coalition and supported by the Lincoln County School District. Local restaurants Georgie’s, Quimby’s, Mo’s, and La Maison donated food for meals for all students participating in the program.
