NSO’s Music Education Programs

In addition to presenting high quality classical music concerts, the NSO is committed to serving the Lincoln County community with a variety of education programs. These programs include:

Youth Orchestra

The NSO supports the Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC), a growing youth orchestra for intermediate to high school musicians of all instruments, including strings, woodwinds, and brass. For younger, inexperienced musicians, the NSO offers the Overture Strings program where these students learn to play together as a group. The NSO offers the Family Strings program to beginning elementary school children whose families cannot afford the full cost of private string lessons.

Musician Visits to Local Schools
NSO Music Director Adam Flatt, select NSO musicians, and many of the symphony’s guest soloists visit Lincoln County classrooms when they are in Newport for concerts. If you would like your class/school to be considered for such visits, please contact the NSO office.

Free Concerts
NSO is committed to making live orchestral music experiences accessible to wide audiences. The NSO presents an annual free, family-friendly performance on the 4th of July at Newport High School. This popular event is made possible by the generous support of Oregon Coast Bank, and other local business sponsors. Each spring, the Salem Youth Symphony Philharmonia Orchestra visits the coast to perform for Lincoln County third graders at the Performing Arts Center. The Newport Youth Symphony performs a winter and spring concerts for the community. Look for announcements of these and other free concerts on this website, or contact the NSO office for more information about upcoming events.
