Kathy Follett conducts the youth orchestra in rehearsal

The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC)

School-aged music students from the Oregon coast rehearse and perform together throughout the year in two NSO-sponsored youth orchestras. The youth orchestras are co-coordinated and led by NSO violinist Barbara Wilcox. The beginner's orchestra, Overture Strings, is comprised of entry-level string players. The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC) is the full orchestra that includes intermediate and advanced string students, as well as youth woodwind, brass and percussion players.

The NYSOC is joined by selected adults who are at a similar performing level, as well as a few more experienced adult musicians. These lifelong learners help fill out the orchestra and demonstrate that it’s never too late to learn to play a new instrument. The fees for these programs are $50 for the year.

We currently rehearse in the Newport High School band room and are grateful for the support of the Lincoln County School District.

If you would like to join, please contact Kayli Jones, Youth Program Coordinator, at youth@newportsymphony.org
