The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC)
School-aged music students from the Oregon coast rehearse and perform together throughout the year in two new NSO-sponsored youth orchestras. The youth orchestras are co-coordinated and led by NSO violinists Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox, with help from other NSO string musicians and area instructors. The beginners’ orchestra, the Overture Strings, is comprised of entry-level string players. The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC) is the full orchestra that includes intermediate and advanced string students, as well as youth woodwind, brass and percussion players.
Both orchestras are joined by selected adults who are at a similar performing level, as well as a few more experienced adult musicians. These lifelong learners help fill out the orchestra, and demonstrate that it’s never too late to learn to play a new instrument. If you would like to join, please contact Kathy Follett at 503-201-3408.
